Devotee Care South Africa (DCSA), an integral part of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in South Africa, recently hosted a highly relevant End-of-Life Seminar at the Sri Sri Radha Radhanath Temple in Durban during the last week of August 2023. The seminar, held in collaboration with the Bhaktivedanta Medical Association (BMA), provided invaluable insights into the delicate subject of end-of-life care.

The seminar addressed the profound questions and concerns surrounding end-of-life care within the context of practicing spiritual life. Attendees were offered a wealth of information and practical guidance on navigating the challenges of this critical phase of life. The event was graced by Sukanti Radha Dasi, a vital member of the BMA and a disciple of HH Jayapataka Swami. Her expertise and compassionate approach deeply impacted the audience.

The seminar began by exploring different viewpoints on death and dying, setting the stage for a prescriptive discussion. Attendees were engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue as they contemplated the spiritual dimension of this universal experience. One participant shared, “This was very informative. I understand a lot more about death and dying now.”

A key highlight of the seminar was its focus on the dignity of dying. Sukanti Radha skillfully elaborated on the importance of maintaining spiritual wellness and alleviating spiritual distress during the end-of-life journey. This theme resonated with attendees, as one devotee expressed, “I have a clear understanding of what a dying devotee experiences and how I can assist them with the process. Very informative & practical.”

Practical aspects of end-of-life care were meticulously covered, including developing a devotee hospital passport and the principles of end-of-life care. Participants learned how to engage in compassionate conversations with a dying person and what to avoid.

The seminar also included discussions on advanced care planning, which redounds to the benefit of caregivers and those facing the end of their life’s journey. The topic of end-of-life care is pertinent for all devotees, and the event provided attendees with practical tools and knowledge to navigate this phase with grace and devotion.

Aside from Sukanti Radha Dasi’s enlightening presentations, Executive Committee members of Devotee Care SA, Vaishnava Pran Dasa, and Jayananda Dasa contributed an overview of the Antyesti Samskara, the last rites performed for a devotee. They explained the significance of a priest visitation, the Vedic texts to be read at end-of-life ceremonies, and the post-death arrangements. The session gave attendees a comprehensive understanding of the Vedic funeral service, mourning periods, and the profound lessons death teaches about living fully.

The seminar encouraged attendees to participate, ask questions, and engage in discussions. One devotee mentioned, “Sukanti Radha Prabhu is very approachable to answer questions and converse.” This interactive approach ensured that the seminar addressed the unique concerns and queries of the devotee community.

Attendees also provided feedback, offering valuable insights to enhance future seminars. Suggestions included providing more detailed step-by-step handouts and electronic resources and covering topics related to specially challenged devotees who are often marginalized.

As the seminar concluded, the mood was one of gratitude and reflection. Devotees expressed their appreciation for the initiative and the opportunity to learn more about end-of-life care within the spiritual context.

Devotee Care South Africa’s End-of-Life Seminar undoubtedly left a lasting impact on attendees, equipping them with the knowledge and compassion necessary to provide meaningful support to devotees facing the end of their lives. The poignant discussions, germane insights, and practical guidance offered during the event have redounded to the benefit of the entire devotee community in South Africa.

In conclusion, DCSA’s commitment to addressing devotees’ prescriptive needs in all life phases is commendable. The End-of-Life Seminar serves as a shining example of their dedication to nurturing the spiritual well-being of devotees, even during the most profound moments of transition. As the devotees of ISKCON South Africa continue to grow in their understanding of end-of-life care, they are now better equipped to provide compassionate support to their fellow devotees, ensuring that the journey towards the spiritual realm is filled with grace and devotion.
